Problem
Solving: Getting out of a Loop
Observing children involved in problem-solving provides us with an opportunity to learn about their understanding of the physical and social world. In this scenario, we see a child frustrated by glue stuck to his fingers. The glue’s stickiness creates a problem for the child to solve.

Pretend
Play: Washing Hands Without Water
Observing children involved in pretend play provides us with an opportunity to learn about their understanding of the physical and social world. In these video clips of two girls pretending to wash their hands, we learn that they understand that “washing” requires a back and forth scrubbing action (a movement not required when you are simply rinsing or warming your hands). We observe their strategies for maintaining their play as a pair: one leads, the other follows. Finally, we see a role reversal occur, but it does not threaten the evolution of the play.
